Strengthening Conservation of Marine Migratory Species
Protecting migratory marine species and their critical habitats through regional cooperation across the ROPME Sea Area.
Overview
ROPME has been recognized as a CMS Champion Plus for its initiative “Strengthening Conservation of Marine Species and their Habitats in the ROPME Sea Area (2026โ2028).” The initiative strengthens science-based regional cooperation to conserve marine migratory species, their critical habitats, and the migratory pathways that connect them across the region.
Why It Matters
The ROPME Sea Area supports globally significant populations of:
- Marine turtles
- Dugongs
- Sharks
- Rays
These species face increasing pressures from habitat degradation, fisheries interactions, pollution, and climate change. Conserving their habitats and migration routes is essential for maintaining healthy marine ecosystems and regional biodiversity.
ROPME’s Commitment
Through its partnership with the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), ROPME is committed to:
- Strengthening regional cooperation among Member States.
- Supporting science-based conservation and monitoring.
- Enhancing regional knowledge of migratory species and critical habitats.
- Building national capacity to monitor and manage important marine ecosystems.
- Protecting shared marine biodiversity through coordinated action.
Supporting Regional and Global Goals
The initiative aligns with the ROPME Strategic Directions 2026โ2030 and contributes to international biodiversity and conservation objectives by promoting effective management of marine habitats, improving regional collaboration, and safeguarding migratory species throughout the ROPME Sea Area.
Looking Ahead
ROPME’s participation in the CMS Migratory Species Champion Programme reflects its long-term commitment to protecting the region’s iconic marine wildlife and ensuring a healthy, resilient, and productive marine environment for present and future generations through collaborative regional action.
