The Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME), in collaboration with Oil Spill Response Limited (OSRL), convened a virtual workshop titled “Oil Spill Dispersants in Spill Response” on Monday, November 3. The event brought together emergency response officers and specialized teams from ROPME Member States to address evolving challenges in marine pollution management.
The workshop focused on the strategic role of dispersants in oil spill response, emphasizing their effectiveness in mitigating environmental damage. A central theme was the global discontinuation of the widely used COREXIT product, a development that has significant implications for regional preparedness and operational protocols.
Participants explored the potential impact of this shift on the ROPME Sea Area and discussed adaptive strategies to ensure continued resilience in spill response efforts. The session also introduced proposed updates to regional policies and frameworks aimed at aligning with international best practices while addressing local environmental sensitivities.
George Stafford, Dispersant Technical Advisor at OSRL, delivered the keynote address, offering expert insights into dispersant technologies and their evolving role in global response systems. His presentation underscored the importance of innovation and collaboration in navigating the changing landscape of marine environmental protection.
The workshop concluded with an engaging Q&A session, fostering dialogue among participants and encouraging the exchange of field experiences, technical knowledge, and regional perspectives. The interactive format reinforced the importance of cross-border cooperation and continuous learning in safeguarding marine ecosystems.
