On the occasion of World Environment Day 2023, the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME) organized a virtual workshop on the management of plastic wastes on 8 June 2023. The workshop brought together experts and representatives from member states. They discussed sustainable solutions to plastic pollution in both marine and terrestrial environments.
The event opened with a welcome and introduction by the Executive Secretary of ROPME, followed by presentations on the sustainable management of plastic wastes, the status of marine plastic litter in the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the challenges and prospects of waste management by experts from Bahrain, Iran, and Kuwait. Representatives from Kuwait Municipality and Saudi Arabia shared their national experiences and strategies for addressing plastic pollution.
The session concluded with a general discussion, enabling participants to exchange experiences, best practices, and collaborative approaches to improve plastic waste management across the region. Overall, the workshop reinforced ROPME’s commitment to helping member states safeguard marine and coastal environments through regional cooperation, knowledge sharing, and capacity-building initiatives
