The project was officially launched with a dynamic virtual kick-off meeting on 23 December 2024, setting the stage for a comprehensive regional initiative. This digital convening was immediately followed by a high-impact, five-day in-person workshop held from 5โ€“9 January 2025, which focused intensively on the deployment of the Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (AS-ISK). These foundational events brought together a diverse and dedicated group of 34 participants, including:

  • Member State Representatives: Key environmental officers from ROPME nations.
  • ROPME Professional Staff: Technical experts facilitating the program.
  • Strategic Stakeholders: Partners invested in regional biosecurity and marine health.

The workshop served as a critical capacity-building platform, designed not just to introduce the project framework but to equip participants with the practical skills necessary for immediate application. Through hands-on sessions and expert-led training, attendees gained proficiency in utilizing the AS-ISK tool to assess the risks posed by non-native aquatic species. The curriculum was structured to ensure a robust understanding of invasive species management, covering essential technical areas such as:

  1. Risk Screening Protocols: Methodologies for identifying high-risk species before they become established.
  2. Data Interpretation: Techniques for analyzing biological and ecological data.
  3. Policy Alignment: Integrating scientific findings into national and regional policy frameworks.

This initial phase has successfully laid the groundwork for an ambitious 10-month program that will extend far beyond the classroom. Participants departed the workshop ready to spearhead a series of country-based case studies, transforming theoretical knowledge into actionable regional data. The upcoming roadmap for the project is extensive and includes several key deliverables:

  • Statistical Assessments: Rigorous data analysis to quantify invasion risks.
  • GIS Mapping: Visualizing the potential spread and impact of invasive species.
  • Comprehensive Reporting: Synthesizing findings to inform future conservation strategies.
