ROPME, in partnership with CEFAS, hosted a virtual workshop on macro litter monitoring in the ROPME Sea Area on 9 January 2024. The workshop brought together over 60 participants from Member States, including marine scientists, environmental managers, and policy-makers, to strengthen regional capacity in monitoring marine litter and support the development of harmonized methodologies for data collection, analysis, and reporting. This initiative is part of the broader regional programme to assess and manage marine litter in the ROPME Sea Area.
The workshop focused on key aspects of macro litter monitoring, including seafloor and beach litter, abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear (ALDFG), and the use of innovative tools and technologies such as remote sensing and artificial intelligence for monitoring. Presentations also explored the socio-economic implications of marine litter, emphasizing its impact on fisheries, tourism, and coastal communities. Strategies for public engagement, including the development of educational materials and awareness campaigns, were highlighted as essential components of tackling marine litter.
Participants shared their national experiences and current practices, providing valuable insight into existing monitoring programmes, data gaps, and regional challenges. Discussions also explored opportunities to integrate macro litter monitoring into broader environmental monitoring frameworks, enhancing the efficiency and impact of regional marine conservation efforts. The workshop concluded with interactive Q&A sessions, fostering knowledge exchange, dialogue, and strengthened collaboration among Member States. By bringing together experts and stakeholders from across the region, this workshop marked a significant step toward establishing a coordinated, regional approach to monitoring, assessing, and mitigating macro litter in the ROPME Sea Area, laying the foundation for informed decision-making and sustainable management of marine resources.
