The Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME) successfully celebrated Regional Environment Day under the theme “Sailing towards Sustainability”, held from 20-24 April 2025. The event brought together students, experts and specialists in marine environment and sustainability to raise awareness about the importance of protecting marine ecosystems, highlight regional environmental challenges, and promote responsible practices among students, professionals, and environmental stakeholders.
The official celebration on 24 April 2025 featured an opening speech by the Executive Secretary, along with the presentation of shields to organizers in recognition of their efforts. Scientific sessions covered a variety of topics, including sediment monitoring for toxicity and heavy metals, seawater quality assessments, fish and fishing methods, marine plastic pollutants and petroleum derivatives, as well as coral reefs and marine biology, presented by the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training and Kuwait University.
Around 137 participants from ROPME Member States and from other organizations attended the main celebrations, while hundreds of children took part in complementary environmental awareness activities. Participants actively engaged in interactive sessions and tours aimed at fostering environmental knowledge and responsible behavior. Complementary events were held from 5–12 May 2025, emphasising environmental awareness activities that reinforced ROPME’s commitment to regional cooperation and the sustainable protection of the marine environment.
