The Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME) celebrated the Regional Environment Day 2023 under the theme “Dust Storms and their Effects on the Land and Marine Ecosystems.” Regional Environment Day is observed every year on 24 April; however, in 2023 the celebration was postponed to 8–10 May to take place after the Eid Al-Fitr holidays. Activities were organized at ROPME Headquarters in Granada, Kuwait, and through virtual platforms.
The objective of this year’s celebration was to raise awareness of the increasing frequency of dust storms in the region, share scientific knowledge on their environmental and health impacts, and promote regional cooperation in developing measures to minimize their effects. The program also sought to enhance public understanding of the links between dust storms, land degradation, and marine ecosystem health.
