Organized by the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME) and the Embassy of France in Kuwait, in collaboration with the Environment Public Authority (EPA) and the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), the two-day workshop took place on 27–28 May 2025 at ROPME Headquarters, Kuwait.
The workshop served as a regional knowledge-building contribution to the UN “Blue Talks” initiative, in preparation for the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC-3) in Nice, France. It brought together around 196 participants from ROPME Member States and other institutions, including scientists nominated for the 2025 UN Ocean Conference.
The event focused on sea level rise, coastal resilience, and climate adaptation strategies, featuring both regional and international expertise. Presentations addressed the causes, impacts, and future risks of sea level rise, as well as Kuwait’s monitoring efforts, environmental policies, and real-time sea level monitoring stations, including specifications, data acquisition, and global integration.
Regional climate change stressors in the inner ROPME Sea Area were examined, highlighting key risks, drivers, and collaborative strategies. France shared its experience in coastal adaptation as a case study.
Participants engaged in discussions on enhancing coastal resilience, addressing urban vulnerabilities, fostering climate transparency, and implementing strategic mitigation and adaptation frameworks. The sessions concluded with a panel discussion that fostered regional dialogue, knowledge exchange, and collaboration. The workshop provided a valuable platform for strengthening regional expertise and supporting global efforts to conserve and sustainably use ocean resources, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 14.
